First National Office for Conservation Districts Celebrated

southcarolinaLast week, three NACD officials participated in the unveiling ceremony of a marker for the first office of the National Association of Soil Conservation Districts (the forerunner of the NACD) in Spartanburg, SC.

NACD board member Larry Nates of South Carolina, NACD Executive Board member John Finch of North Carolina, and NACD Immediate Past President Gene Schmidt of Indiana joined conservation district officials and friends at the event, held Thursday, August 29.

The National Association of State Conservation Agencies (NASCA) and the National Conservation District Employees Association (NCDEA) also participated and supported the event.

The South Carolina Conservation Districts Foundation, in conjunction with the South Carolina Association of Conservation Districts, secured approval of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and the city of Spartanburg to erect a historical marker identifying the first office of the National Association of Soil Conservation Districts. The marker was erected adjacent to the original office building, the Montgomery Building, on North Church Street, in Spartanburg.
